Unity - Literal or Metaphor

There's been a lot of discussion lately about the idea of unity and 'one church' at SDBC, and it has brought issues up such as the chinese/english church, different services, different home groups, and different youth activities just as examples. The push is for all these activities, meetings, and groups to be united as one church - this was supposed to be demonstrated in events such as combined services. There's been many pushing and pulling and re-organising happening, but my question is: is it really necessary?

I've been part of SDBC for 11 years now... and no one can doubt that I am a part of SDBC. I've been active in many different areas of the church, and i do feel very much united as a part of SDBC. Do i feel united in these big church events - the answer is yes, of course. Its awesome seeing everyone together as one big group. BUT, is that the only way to feel united - the answer to me is no. I feel united as part of SDBC with my fellow SDBC members because I know that we are all on the same path, to the same direction, and with the same common purpose. Maybe it is good to have big gathering events once in a while, but it isn't the be all and end all of being united. I may have a different interest to the bloke sitting at the back of the church, or the guys that go to different services - and this is where the small groups come in. Unity doesn't mean we all have to be together all the time and every time. We need to have the same purpose and common goal - that is the key of unity to me.

Taming the Tongue

Today's service was named "taming the tongue". The truths from the sermon are so true and applicable to anyone and everyone. The tongue... though such a small part of a person, says a lot about the person. It has the power to bless, and to curse. When uncontrolled, the tongue can be sharper than any sword.

The video clip before the sermon was very powerful... countless words... infinite hours of work... everything thats been done, can be undone by one word.

We have to be in control of what we say. We have to tolerate others, and speak truth in love. There's no more rejection than being criticised openly by others. One word can change lives.

What's left in life?

I'm in an assessment mood. Around me, everyone is madly rushing and studying to achieve their so called "perfection" or however close they will get to it. However, I'm just sitting here, wondering... what's left in life, when things drive you to be a monotonous workaholic?

I'm a firm believer of work, rest, and play. I'm Asian. I grew up with parents, who, ironically are teachers and now tutors, who were always on my back, screaming and shouting and telling me to study my brains off, or my future will be gone. It's probably true, that if u have no work ethic, you're probably stuffed for the future, but to me, work isn't the centre of life. Some would say "but josh.. you're smart! we're not!" or "yeah we know you're smart josh"... but that isn't the point. If work was the centre of life... what would the world look like? It would probably look like one of those gloomy factories that boring engineers work at. Everyone just standing looking at the production line... waiting to do their job. It would look like a computer... like a robot... like a machine.

If work is the central part of your life, I think you've totally misunderstood. Work is a part of life, yes. To most, its an important part of life. If life was a machine, where would the laughter be? how would you find your close friends? where would you see the beautiful smiles on people's faces? where would you find time to relax? to rest? to play?

Keep your balance. Know what life is all about. Then, you will be truly satisfied.

Fashion Etc.

During the past semester we've been having interesting discussions about decoration, ornament and fashion in our history tutes... revealing many many things about its influence. Stuff about beauty and 'inherent' beauty (its universally accepted as beautiful) or 'positive' beauty (when its up to someone's taste or perception that its beautiful). Apparently this debate has been going on for more than a millennia, and the idea of ornament has governed many different periods of architecture and history.

Well this week's tutorial was the finale! many points came out of our text and discussion like:
  • one who tattoos himself is like a 2 year old
  • one who tattoos himself is a criminal and a degenerate
  • one who ornaments is trapped in the past and is also a 2 year old and a degenerate
  • one who rids himself of ornament has proved mature and above society and its trends of fashion and ornament
  • this is why architects supposedly all wear black so they use their creativity on their projects as opposed to ornamenting themselves

Also some points from other tutes:

  • a demented hand made vase is worth more than the elegant machined vase
  • a machine-made beautiful pearl necklace is nothing more than supporting slave labour
  • imperfect but original is better than perfect and machined
  • women support slave labour when they buy jewellry
  • perfume was originally made so people could substitute it for having showers

Ok back to work =P

How to recognize that you are a design student

The alarm clock tells you when to go to sleep

You know what UHU tastes like

Redbull, coffee and cokes are tools, not treats

You’ve slept more than 20 hours nonstop in a single weekend

You’ve listened to all your cd’s in less than 48 hours

You’re not seen in public

You lose your house keys for a week, and you didn’t even notice

You’ve used an entire roll of film to photograph a sidewalk

You’ve become excellent at recycling when it becomes to making models

You use holidays only as extra sleeping time

You’ve got more photos of buildings than of actual people

You’ve taken your boyfriend/girlfriend on a date to a construction site

You can live without human contact, food or daylight, but if you can’t print, its chaos

When you are being shown pictures of a trip, you ask what the human scale is

You can use Photoshop, Illustrator, and make a webpage, but you can’t use Excel

You buy 50 dollar architectural magazines that you haven’t read yet

When someone offers you a BIC pen, you feel offended

Do you know how it feels?

Do you know how it feels
To live life every day
Waiting to be noticed
In any particular way

Do you know how it feels
When you are all alone
No one to see or listen to
Or talk to on the phone

Do you know how it feels
To wake up to the bright sun
An exciting day ahead of you
Instead at the end, the day is none

How would you really feel
If your loved ones turned you away
They were your only refuge
The reason you chose to stay

Why do people live every day
Treating others as if all were the same
When everyone carries heavy burdens
Our suffering, hurt and pain.

The best bus in the world is...

169!!!
The best bus service in the world! Reduces joshi's bus trip from home to UQ by a massive 30 minutes! Yes... from an original 10 minute walk to GC, 20 minute bus to the city, 10 minute walk and wait for the 407/412, and then another 20-25 minutes to get to the wrong side of uni, and then walking 5 minutes to the architecture building... Joshi now walks 10 minutes to GC, hops on the awesome 169 (at about 9 - 9:30 with a relatively empty bus) and 18 minutes later, he is about a 2 minute walk away from the architecture building :D

Uni is pretty normal again i guess, except heaps of newbies that i know hahaha... We're already getting assignments! The one we got today is pretty cool... we have to renovate an existing building into an 'ecohome' or an eco-friendly home. Yesterday's lecture was interesting too... about greek and roman architecture. Its really awesome looking at the ancient buildings and deciphering the ideologies and thoughts behind their masterpieces.

Other than that... really tired and stuffed from working 6 full days last week. FiGS was awesome though... first time we had such a full on program... and it was great! Hopefully we can continue on this platform we have begun to build, and really have fun while learning heaps. Also... so much stuff happening lately! Mum went to melb for the past 2 weeks cos of my cousin's wedding! First one from mum's side i think. Last year, we went to malaysia for the first wedding from my generation in the whole family (both mum and dad's side). Now 2 weddings have taken place... both my fav. cousins from each side :P and another wedding in the next month down in melb... and then one (or two... waiting for news... lol) at the end of the year!

What else has happened...? hmmm... last sunday was first soccer game with all the youth around bris. It was really awesome, even though a few randoms rocked up. Badminton is getting a little boring lately... thought i mite still play in the next comp. Hopefully more people and better people will come on fridays and sundays so I can have a good hit out!

Well.. that's all from me... busy busy me :) might take a nap now hehe (look at the time i posted :P)

Norm kicks in again...

Well... after a massive summer holiday... it looks like the norm has kicked in again for 2007. Work has been a real eye opener about how to manage time more efficiently... and I'm probably gonna learn more about that with work + uni combination, and also missing parent(s) for at least 6 weeks this first semester! Been awesome catching up with my best buddy for the past week or so... but now, uni is around the corner and we are really into 2007!

Anyways... have a few funny work stories... (from a computer shop)

1. Customer calls in: "do you guys actually sell computer parts!?!?"

2. Customer calls in: "do you have any 5.25 inch floppy disc drivse for sale?"

3. Customer brings in system that 'overheated'. After technician analyses the system... he finds a piece of plastic melted on the CPU (plastic was part of packaging and customer did not remove it...)

4. Customer asks if CD rom drive can be used as a cup holder.

Proud to be An Aussie

Being Australian is about driving in a German car to an Irish pub for a Belgian beer, then travelling home, grabbing an Indian curry or a Turkish kebab on the way, to sit on Swedish furniture and watch American shows ona Japanese TV.

Only in Australia ... can a pizza get to your house faster than an ambulance.

Only in Australia ... do supermarkets make sick people walk all the way to the back of the shop to get their prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front.

Only in Australia ... do people order double cheeseburgers, large friesand a DIET coke.

Only in Australia ... do banks leave both doors open and chain the pens tothe counters.

Only in Australia ... do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars on thedrive and lock our junk and cheap lawn mower in the garage.

Only in Australia ... do we use answering machines to screen calls andthen have call waiting so we won't miss a call from someone we didn't wantto talk to in the first place.

Only in Australia ... are there disabled parking places in front of a skating rink.

NOT TO MENTION...
3 Aussies die each year testing if a 9v battery works on their tongue.
142 Aussies were injured in 1999 by not removing all pins from new shirts.
58 Aussies are injured each year by using sharp knives instead of screwdrivers.
31 Aussies have died since 1996 by watering their Christmas tree while the fairy lights were plugged in.
8 Aussies had serious burns in 2000 trying on a new jumper with a lit cigarette in their mouth.
A massive 543 Aussies were admitted to emergency in the last two years after opening bottles of beer with their teeth.
And finally.... in 2000 eight Aussies cracked their skull whilst throwing up into the toilet.

2006... The year that flew by...

Well its the last day of 2006... and almost 2007... and i guess its an appropriate time to look back on what can be summed up as the year that flew by. Although for me the year 'flew by', i gotta admit its the busiest year i've ever faced... with heaps of big decisions and milestones. I reckon the highlight of my life.. and the lowlight of my life so far has occurred in the past year. But in the end... what really pulled me through were all of my friends... those who are there for me when i'm happy or sad, smiling or crying, whatever the situation is, my friends were always there for me. I met heaps and heaps of new friends, which probably don't know how much they have impacted on my life... also old friends from high/primary school which I am so happy to still be awesome friends with.

I can barely remember 2006... it started off on a bad note: my uncle passed away on 2nd Jan because of throat cancer. I spent new years in the hospital ward, and woke up the next day with the news. I knew 2006 would be when I turned 18... but adulthood really hit me in the face then. Life can come and go just like that... but I remember one of the last things I heard my uncle say... he said that he was satisfied and happy with his life. That really challenged me to live a good life and be satisfied with whatever it throws at you. I should be happy because maybe there will be no tomorrow? I should tell my friends how special they are to me as if it was the last time I could do that.

Another step for me in 2006 was the beginning of university life. I was happy with my course and eager to settle into university life. The first thing that hit me was the scope difference between school and uni. In school there are 25 people in class and 1500 in your school... but in uni there are like 100+ people in a lecture and like thousands of people in the actual campus. I was lucky to find a group of friends who are really friendly and also relatively focused on uni =P. Also, was able to meet with other friends during breaks, which was really good.

Because of uni and everything... I think my friendship groups were really mixed and stuffed up. I rarely met up with high school friends, and i wouldn't say I had 'best buddies' among my church friends, but I was really blessed to find a new group of friends through badminton. These people overlapped to church friends and also friends of my old friends, so it was really cool! I reckon I wouldn't have survived the year without these people, and they mean so much to me.

I've said it so much... especially in the last few months (where i've tried to get the most outa them by sleeping at 1am at least every night) but I think its true. Time goes by so fast. Once we catch up with wat is happening around us, something else pops up and we have to catch up with that. Can't we just pause time and savour those moments? There have been so many occasions where I just wish time was infinite and at our mercy. Also times where we could just have things the way we thought them out to be. Times where everything would be perfect. But we live in a fallen world, where imperfections are abundant. Life can be cruel, but life is something to be treasured. I don't wanna ever waste a moment of my life. One thing I've learnt is to always have a smile on my face ^__^ ... Its been plastered there by various ppl many times this year... and I hope it won't need to be plastered on anymore! I probably will still be evil and mean when i can get away with it... but otherwise I wanna be the best person and friend I can be.

2007 is coming... with its ups and downs. Sure... there will be moments of helplessness, but I know for sure that there will be times of celebration... times of happiness, love, friendship... times that I wouldn't trade anything for. 2007 is a big year... let's just hope its a good year for everyone! ^______^

Holidays...

Well the past few days have gone pretty fast... been keeping myself busy with church stuff, badminton, work, reading, and the occasional msn chat or two =P And its amazing! tonight will be the third night in just about 4 months that i've slept before 11!! Great accomplishment for joshi~!!

Mmmm christmas time is getting closer~ less than 2 weeks away!! I wonder wat suprises will there be this year? Lots of X-mas carols coming up i guess... voice gonna die and everything... Work is making us wear santa hats and stuff... But the most important thing about X-mas is to remember and remind ourselves of the truth behind it! X-mas isnt just some made up time where some big fat red dude comes down ur chimney (or the big fat red dude who is lonered at plaza says my parents) and gives you presents... That's obviously a fairytale. Just remember... why X-mas equals presents... and then you'll realise what the greatest gift can ever be... and what the greatest gift is...

Badminton + holidays

Yes holidays sinking in! Last sunday was QLD Juniors Badminton comp... and it was awesome! Got there at about 2 and bummed around with the others... everyone was playing so seriously! Watched heaps of games and umpired a few too... talking with ppl about really random stuff :S listening to ipod... until my first game at 3:45. Man... my games were all pretty scary... against state level players and stuff! Under 19/21 singles... won my first game amazingly and comfortably 31-24. I pissed the guy off so much with my serves and he chucked his racquet on the ground. Talk about anger management lol.

Then a few more mins passed... then had to verse brian... crazy state level A/open player... and lol.. was beating him in the beginning 14-9. I was like OMG! Think he wasn't playing very well though... and i didn't give him many smash chances so yeah. I think I managed 20 points in the end. I was happy... was playing pretty well hehe. Then i got wasted by this dragon club dude... he was playing awesome and i was still playing okay... i got just under 20 points so that was okay. hmmmm... haha then i vs'ed this Aus jr team guy... he beat me 21-1 once ages ago so that was a scary proposition hehe. I was beating him in a few stages... then he romped home and beat me about 31-20ish so I was pretty happy still. Then vs'ed this other dragon club guy and lost about 31-20 and i was dead at that time so meh. Can't believe i beat a state team dude and got 20ish points off everyone else hehe. Then up came mixed doubles lol. Me and Elaine had this game plan =P and it worked LOL. We were both a bit tired (well i was anyway...) and SOMEONE kept on hitting the net and giving nice lollipop shots *stare* but we got through and won comfortably... even though the scoreline was a bit close. Then came MD which sucked so i wont talk about it.

Funniest moment was when it started storming... thunder went BOOOOM! and then... LOL half the lights went out! One court was closed cos all these leaves and rain came in through the top lourves... and the other courts had a bit of water on them too! So the lights went out for about 20 minutes... and with 1 unavaiable court for about 1hr... the comp was delayed soooo long. On the way home all the lights on mains rd were dead.. and the intersections were all chaotic. Luckily no stupid drivers on the road or else joshi might not be here. Crap moment was when sandy did a spectacular 180 degree twisting dive! lol thats not the crap bit... that's the awesome bit =P crap bit is she did her ankle badly :( hope you get well soon =P

Anyway more later... c ya

When it all falls apart

Have you ever looked forward to something... something that u really really wanted to go to, or some event that u just really wanted to take place, or just a certain day to come... but when that day came, your expectation, anticipation, and all that excitement and hype was just torn to shreds? Not just torn to shreds... just totally obliterated. Your anticipation gone down the drain... but thats not all.. not only that something is gone... your future is just muddled by this unexpected twist of fortunes.
I am not a guy with huge expectations... and i'm sure there are many out there like me. There are times wen u just wanna smash your head on the wall out of frustration or disappointment... not because of your huge expectations, but merely because logic has not prevailed. Somethings that are straightforward become a tangled mess.
I personally have never experienced what it feels like when everything is falling apart around me... but gee... from what i'm going thru now... it must be a pretty bad feeling.
