In a 1976lecture, English Literature Professor Clyde Kilby gave ten steps on how to stayalive to the beauty of God's world:

1. At leastonce every day I shall look steadily up at the sky and remember that I, a consciousnesswith a conscience, am on a planet traveling in space with wonderfullymysterious things above me and about me.

2. Insteadof the accustomed idea of a mindless and endless evolutionary change to whichwe can neither add nor subtract, I shall suppose the universe guided by anIntelligence which, as Aristotle said of Greek drama, requires a beginning, amiddle and an end. I think this will save me from the cynicism expressed byBertrand Russell before his death, when he said: "There is darknesswithout and when I die there will be darkness within. There is no splendour, novastness anywhere, only triviality for a moment, and then nothing."

3. I shallnot fall into the falsehood that this day, or any day, is merely anotherambiguous and plodding twenty-four hours, but rather a unique event filled, ifI so wish, with worthy potentialities. I shall not be fool enough to suppose thattrouble and pain are wholly evil parentheses in my existence but just as likelyladders to be climbed toward moral and spiritual manhood.

4. I shallnot turn my life into a thin straight line which prefers abstractions toreality. I shall know what I am doing when I abstract, which of course I shalloften have to do.

5. I shallnot demean my own uniqueness by envy of others. I shall stop boring into myselfto discover what psychological or social categories I might belong to. Mostly Ishall simply forget about myself and do my work.

6. I shallopen my eyes and ears. Once every day I shall simply stare at a tree, a flower,a cloud, or a person. I shall not then be concerned at all to ask what they are but simply beglad that they are. I shall joyfully allow them themystery of what Lewis calls their "divine, magical, terrifying andecstatic" existence.

7. I shallsometimes look back at the freshness of vision I had in childhood and try, atleast for a little while, to be, in the words of Lewis Carroll, the "childof the pure unclouded brow, and dreaming eyes of wonder."

8. I shallfollow Darwin's advice and turn frequently to imaginative things such as goodliterature and good music, preferably, as Lewis suggests, an old book andtimeless music.

9. I shallnot allow the devilish onrush of this century to usurp all my energies but willinstead, as Charles Williams suggested, "fulfill the moment as themoment." I shall try to live well just now because the only time thatexists is just now.

10. Even if Iturn out to be wrong, I shall bet my life in the assumption that this world isnot idiotic, neither run by an absentee landlord, but that today, this veryday, some stroke is being added to the cosmic canvas that in due course I shallunderstand with joy as a stroke made by the architect who calls Himself Alphaand Omega.

Making The Most Of The Cross

When do you think is the most defining point in history? As a follower of Christ, my answer to this question undoubtedly is the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

John Chapman's recent book "Making the most of the Cross" explains a series of important truths which come out of the belief that Jesus did die and rise again. Chapman's argument through his book, is that if Jesus actually did die on the cross, and rise again from the dead, then His death and resurrection is the most important and most life changing event in the whole of history.

I really enjoyed reading this book and being reminded of many truths that I hold firm to because I believe that Jesus is my Lord and Saviour. In particular, I was able to ponder and marvel at the fact that Jesus took my sins (rebellion against God the creator) away on the cross by dying in my place, and He rose again to prove that death had no hold of Him. I was also able to think through the whole concept of Jesus' substitutionary sacrifice and again praise God for His love and mercy.

One thing that I found great about this book was that it seemed very sensitive to those who may be reading and learning about Jesus for the first time. The text in the book is written in a very simple manner, without much Christian jargon, but packed with many real life and personal illustrations, which allows it to be a good resource for those who may be new Christians or those trying to find out more about Jesus. The book is less than 100 pages long, which made it a very easy read.

If you're looking to be reminded of the importance of the Cross of Christ, or you are trying to find out more about this history changing event, or you want to give your friends who are interested in religion something to think about, I would very much recommend this book to you!

I fear the day when our goals as the body of Christ is merely to be a 'positive influence' and to make people 'feel valued'.

Does that not undervalue the gospel of the Cross of Christ?

A Call to Men to take Responsibility

Suffering and Following Christ

I saw this phrase today on a magazine: "Suffering is a sure companion on every Christian's journey."

How true that is. Last week I was preparing for Sunday's sermon and was reading Paul's experience in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra in Acts 13 and 14.

Here's how it went down:

Antioch: Paul preaches the gospel. Jews stir crowd. Paul leaves Antioch. Paul continues to preach gospel.

Iconium: Paul preaches gospel. Jews stir crowd. Jews plot to stone Paul. Paul leaves Iconium. Paul continues to preach gospel.

Lystra: Paul preaches gospel. Jews from Antioch and Iconium follow Paul and stir crowd. Jews stone Paul. Paul lays 'dead' on the ground. Paul gets up. Paul leaves Lystra. Paul continues to preach gospel.

God never promised a cruisey ride. In fact, Jesus said "Anyone who wants to be my disciple must deny himself, take up his cross and follow me". The cross was considered to be one of the most powerful roman examples of execution. Paul's life is the example of a man who suffered greatly for the sake of the gospel. Who's willing to suffer for the sake of the gospel of Jesus Christ?

A Christian's Social Media Facade

As everyone knows by now, there has been a great change in how people relate to each other because of the social media revolution of the past decade. People communicate and are seen through filters such as instant messengers, blogs, facebook, twitter, and now google +.

There are so many church goers connected to these mediums, and I daresay, many of these people choose to post great theological, spiritual and Godly comments on their profiles.

Now, I'm not trying to knock these gestures down... they are very true and encouraging comments. Some people I know utilize this media to do great pre-evangelism to their friends and also encourage their brothers and sisters in Christ immensely. But sometimes, I find that some of these comments become a mere facade for the person posting. Because I know how some of those people actually go about living their lives, there can be sometimes a big discrepancy between the comment and the person. This person who is posting some encouraging verse, the next day, he/she is gossipping, not paying attention during sermons, being rude to other people, etc. etc. A person's social media status does not determine how they are living. In fact, when non-believers see this contrast of lifestyle and commenting, it can even dissuade people from Christianity! How a person lives their lives is by far more important than a mere comment or profile message.

We as Christians need to live out authentic lives that are the example of Christ in us. Let your transformed life do the talking. Don't fall into the trap of smokescreening your life by your social media profile. Live for the Glory of God only.

What does the Cross mean to you?

A couple days ago I heard a segment on the radio talking about what the cross actually means. I thought it was quite interesting as I had been thinking about that subject recently. The cross has so many different meanings in the world these days. Here are some of them:

- A symbol to distinguish christians

- A fashion ornament for celebrities and urban style

- A shorthand in writing for Jesus

- An illustration of Easter

- A sign for a church

- Something we link with Jesus

- The way Jesus died

I think we have all, christians included, forgotten the true meaning and significance of the cross. In the roman empire, crucifixion, or execution on a cross, was the most gruesome punishment considered. So much so, that roman citizens were exempt to being sentenced to death this way - subject to overrule by the emperor. The cross symbolised death in its most horrific form.

When we see a cross and speak of the cross, and even associate ourselves with the cross, we should be reminded of the lengths that Jesus went to take away our sins - his death on the cross. We should be reminded of the mercy of God - that we were destined to die, an eternal death, and God sent Jesus to take our place on the cross that we associate ourselves with. And we also should be reminded of our lives too - in light of Jesus on the cross. Our response is a life being a living sacrifice to worship God.

So what does the cross mean to you? Is it just two straight lines intersecting? Is it just an ornament? Or is it much more?

A Balanced Life - Gaming

I like most of Mark Driscoll's stuff, but I think some of his spiels (as with other notable preachers) I think just go too much to the extreme. This is one of the dangers of teaching/modelling from one side of the spectrum to the other.

In this video, Driscoll says gaming is stupid, its an alternative to living truly for Jesus, amongst other comments.

I disagree with Driscoll in most of the comments in this video, and my concern is that people will either watch this and take his extreme stance, or be turned off from Christianity. There is no problem with gaming in itself. Games are great - they are a good way to relax, a good way to keep your brain ticking, a good way of playing with others. Just like anything else, when gaming takes over your life, or when there is too much gaming, then there are problems. Its like fat - humans actually need to consume fat as part of a healthy diet, but when humans eat too much fat, a lot of problems eventuate. The key is to have a balanced lifestyle and also making sure gaming has not become a little god in your life.

The Power of the Cross

Something has recently dawned upon me like one of those lightbulb moments which has reminded me of one of the essences of Christianity.

We have been hearing sermons and part of meetings relating to new year resolutions, new visions, new strategies, etc. etc. and we always tell people to step up, tell people to up their faith, tell people to trust God....

But all of this is useless if people don't understand the power of the cross.

Why would I really want to step up? Why would I want to be more devoted in my walk with God, more trusting of Him, more passionate about Him?

The reason why we put God first is because what Jesus has done on the cross. This is the only way people will 'press on', will 'tell the world', will be 'stronger' in their faith - through a total conviction that Jesus died to take away their sins and make them right with God.

Lets not forget the magnitude of what Jesus has done for each and every one of us through the cross of calvary.

Songs of 'Praise'

Last night, finally saw Chris Tomlin live with a bunch of friends. Darth Nolla gives a good review of the concert here.

I must say, I didn't enjoy the whole concert. The concert was of two halves, both in the way that there was a clear break between two parts of the concert, and also because of the distinct change in vibe/atmosphere/songs. I enjoyed half the concert.

Why do I say this?

First half of the concert:

- No mention of the cross, of grace, of price paid for us

- Frequent reference of focusing on us, on me, on my, etc.

- Shallow theology (if any at times)

- "Jesus is my boyfriend" songs

- Songs that just can't be sung easily, and with really obscure words and metaphors

- No flow of songs to nail a particular point

Second half of concert:

- All songs focused on our God, on Jesus, on the Lord

- Frequent mention of grace, on who God is, on who Jesus is

- Maybe not meaty theological stuff, but substantial theology through songs

- Songs had a progression towards the message, and out from the message to apply to current situations in our lives

- The lead singer (Chris Tomlin) was humble and his purpose was to lead people to focus on worshipping God

- The songs were a tad high, but were all easy to sing, easy to pick up, easy to join in

Praise God for God glorifying, Gospel driven, Christ centred song leaders and song writers.

Where is Jesus in the Church?

Had a long day with vision planning for SDBC Youth, Vision Sunday music practice, and a SDBC Worship Team dinner, and I had these separate thoughts that kept pointing to one question.

- What is in a vision or goal within a church that doesn't include Jesus Christ?

- Why do we sing so many songs that don't say anything about what Jesus has done for us on the cross?

- Do our lives, in our worship, in our life stories, in our words and actions, reflect the impact of the saving message of Jesus Christ?

I don't know if its just me, but where is Jesus in today's church? Where is Jesus in today's 'Christians'?

God's Word points to Jesus on the cross. The turn of history points to Jesus on the cross. The Holy Spirit is a witness to Jesus on the cross. Who, or where are we pointing to?

True Christian Spirit?

On the way home today from BLT, I was astonished at all the cars parked outside my house and around the suburb. I knew it would have had something to do with the floods, but I had no idea what it was until I got home and asked my parents.

Mum responded me and said: "Volunteers for the flood recovery."

I replied: "Wow that's amazing, so many people!"

Mum again responded: "Yes, that's what they call true Aussie spirit."

Mum was right, Aussies have a great sense of comradery and mateship. But at the same time, I was a bit saddened. If Aussies can get together in the droves to help out those in need, why aren't we as Christians getting out there in droves and helping those around us in spiritual need.

Why aren't we moving in carloads to tell our neighbours about the saving message of Jesus?

Why aren't we packing the planes to share the gospel to the unreached?

Aussies who are great people, but largely nominal unbelievers, can be energised to do good works for the country. We serve and even greater power, the almighty sovereign God that Paul describes so strongly in Colossians 1. Its time to show true Christian spirit in getting out there and sharing the good news to the world.

What to look forward to in 2011

May God bless us with anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people, so that we may work for justice, freedom and peace.
May God bless us with tears to shed for those who suffer from pain, rejection, starvation and war, so that we may reach out our hands to comfort them and turn their pain into joy.
And may God bless us with enough foolishness to believe that we can make a difference in this world, so that we can do what others claim cannot be done.

Mission Madness

So many cross-cultural missions happening this coming month! Please pray for:

1. The SDBC Team going to Tokyo, Japan

They still need 3 homestays and time is ticking before they leave. Please pray for this! Please also pray that God will make divine appointments with the Japanese people through the team. Pray for sensitivity to the Japanese culture, and for relationships to grow during their stay.

2. Pray for the CCCB Team going to Cambodia

Praise God for the young team of CCCB guys and girls going to Cambodia! The country is so in need of God's unconditional love. Pray for the kids programs, the english learning classes, and all the conversations that the team has with the Cambodian people, that everything will be done for the glory of God.

3. Pray for the Taiwan Missions team

Praise God for the ministry that has been consolidated over the past years, and the relationships that have been made with the taiwanese people. Praise God for the new members on the team going to Taiwan and on missions for the first time. Pray that God will continue to move within the taiwanese people and that people will come to faith.

4. Pray for the TBC team going to India

Praise God for this unique experience for Zee Zhang and the others going! Praise God for the work that missionaries have been doing in India for the past century. Pray for continued support for the christian movement in such a hindu stronghold, that God will break the chains of Satan that are holding the Indian people down.

Its such an encouragement to see God's name go out to the ends of the earth!

Christian Hypocrites

"Christians are a bunch of hypocrites"

I have heard this strong phrase many times while speaking to non-Christian workmates and friends, and wished they would look deeper into Christianity. I wish they would look at the real Christians, the ones who are actually following God and living a life for Christ. I mean, there are so many of them out there!

This is probably the way I have thought about Christians and hypocrites until the past few years. Now when I hear this statement, my feelings are sadness and disappointment. After experiencing more of life, looking at people, Christians, and 'Christians', I am just at a loss looking at 'Christians' who live the life of the world. I am saddened looking at Christians who put themselves out as good, nice, and Christ-like, but deep down they can be the total opposite, without any guilt or regret. Where has the honesty, humility and sincerity gone? Then I revisit this common secular phrase again, the stumbling block for many people looking into Christianity, and think again - "Yes, it could be their lack of interest or their uniquely bad experience, but maybe its a wake up call for us too".

Maybe its time for all of us to look honestly, humbly and objectively at ourselves, and really ask ourselves the hard questions: Am I being Christ-like in all my life? Or am I just 50% there, or whatever it is. Am I holding this part of my life ransom and not giving it up to Christ, and why am I doing this? Sure life is busy, but life shouldn't be busy enough that you can't even think about where you're at with life. We need to examine ourselves, monthly, weekly, daily, and continue to move towards Christ-likeness, so that our lives can be a witness to the one God who is sovereign and has saved us from our inequities.

The Modern Demographic

Today's modern world celebrates sin, immorality, foolishness and the like.

Christ calls us to live a life of no compromise, wisdom and self control. A life that celebrates Faith, Hope and Love. Faith in the only one who can save. Hope of a future of eternal joy. Love, like the one who loved us so much that He would sacrifice His son for us.

People around us celebrate their sinfulness, boast about their immorality, pride in their shortcomings, laugh in their foolishness.

The only thing we can celebrate is Christ crucified for us.

Lessons

Over the past few years, I have learnt these important lessons in life:

1. No one and nothing is worth my trust, my time, my effort, except for Jesus.

2. All of my plans are epic fail compared to God's plans.

3. Satan is real. He is swift and subtle, but dangerous and destructive.

4. Satan loves to see me fail. He hates to see me stand up and fight back.

5. Jesus has overcome. My future is secure in His hands, and no other.

But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

Boys 2 Men

Over the past few months, I've had a number of conversations with people about the state of of young men within the church. Most of us have come to a conclusion that there are many 'old' boys but not many young 'real men' in the church today. What sets apart boys from men? Is it the tonka toys they play with compared to big boys toys? Or is it the state of their singleness or relationship? Is it if they are living at home or moved out? Is it the fact that they are in leadership positions or not? Some of these may be relevant in minor ways, but the quality that separates boys and men is maturity.

We need more leaders like this

Here is a trustworthy saying: If anyone sets his heart on being an overseer, he desires a noble task.

Now the overseer must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him with proper respect.(If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God's church?) He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil. He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil's trap.

Deacons, likewise, are to be men worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience. They must first be tested; and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons.

We need more leaders who have these qualities displayed within and throughout their lives....

Been following a tab over the past few months about a 'church' in the USA who is planning to burn Korans on September 11.

I have read a bit about this church.... I think something has gone wrong in the outworking of Christian principles. Their beliefs statement seems to show that they must have skipped or totally misinterpreted a lot of Scripture. They believe Jesus is the only way to God (John 14:6) but then that has outworked in a way of opposition against people who do not believe Jesus is the only way to God (i.e. Muslims).

Lets just get things straight:

1. Jesus came to save the lost, not to condemn the lost. Jesus reaches out to the lost and brings them the gospel of salvation. Jesus in his great commission tells us to do likewise and make disciples in all nations.

2. God loves all people, saved or unsaved. All people are marred by the same sin. God loves all of us. God wants all of us to turn back to Him through Jesus. Now lets think about it. Does a church setting fire to korans allow them to turn back to God, or does it oppress them and victimise them more? Would God burn them in a consuming fire right now? No - He sent Jesus to save them.

3. Jesus tells us to be the light of the world. He tells us to imitate Him. He tells us to love one another, just as God loves us. We are to be role models of the Word so that all peoples, including Muslims, can see the love of Jesus in our lives and turn to Him as their saviour.

Jesus gives us this command:

"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."

I think this church has interpreted the gospel totally incorrect. Lets not oppress the lost. Lets save them by displaying the glory and the love of God to them.

Morning Show Disappointment

Every morning I watch the news while eating breakfast. I put up with talkshow-style segments between each news update, even though half of the stuff they talk about is nonsense. But sometimes, I am just flabbergasted by how brainless these show hosts are.

Among many other examples, I don't understand how one can formally 'apologise' about accidentally calling someone a retard, but then openly and purposely make fun of Christianity and religious people (I think P Jensen was on the show).

The nonsense coming from show hosts from Sunrise, The Today Show, Today Tonight, A Current Affair, and the like is just so sad and disappointing...

Privelaged Teaching...

I think its only in the past few weeks and especially today, that I have realised how privileged we are to have solid, meaty and challenging sermons almost week in week out for the past 7 or so years. Rarely in this time, have we left Sunday morning without being truly opened deeply into the Word of God and challenged to live for Jesus. We are truly blessed...

This year in ministry, I have seen a big push in this idea of "Programs vs People" and the idea of structure/events against people ministry. It has been the generator of many books by solid evangelical organisations, themes of camps and conventions, and in general, the hot topic amongst christian ministry circles.

The big idea of this push is based on the assumption that all churches of today are being focused too much on program and the more relationship people ministry is being neglected. All of the publications about this topic is pushing towards people ministry and follow up. This is well and good - people ministry is where the rubber hits the road, people ministry is where lives are won and lost for Christ, and people ministry is what we are called to in the great commission. However, I think there are some things I think we need to keep in mind as we think about this issue.

1. The push towards people ministry does not mean that structures and programs should be neglected and ignored

In a good model, structures and programs are meant to supplement people ministry, and allow people ministry to happen and happen in a more effective way. For example, an organised youth ministry is much more effective than a spontaneous and clueless youth ministry. A church plant is much more effective when demographic and background analysis is done. In the illustration of the trellis and the vine, the trellis holds the vine up. The trellis still plays a part, but the trellis doesn't dominate or take over from the vine. A good balance of how we view the trellis and the vine is necessary for an optimum ministry. The danger of having a big focus on program is that it overtakes the importance of people ministry. The danger on the flip-side of only focusing on people ministry without thinking about structure and organisation is a ineffective and inefficient ministry.

2. The push towards people ministry is a general statement of churches looking from one extreme (solely program ministry) perspective

When reading to articles and books on this issue, and also listening to people talking about it, we must be discerning and think through the matter objectively rather than blindly take in everything people are saying. These publications about the issue of program vs people are often looking at it from the extreme and general perspective that 'all churches are focusing too much on programs and neglecting people ministry'. Also the publications polarise the issue by painting a picture of the other extreme (of an idealised and fully focused people/follow up ministry) in an attempt to provoke the reader to change his/her perspective. I found this when I was reading "Trellis and the Vine". I found that the authors sometimes spent so much time talking about people ministry and follow up that they were almost putting forward the proposition that structure and programs were not needed. The authors were not saying this, but they were just focusing on the issue of 'how can a church be more people focused'. We only understand this by understanding the perspective and position of the authors. Maybe your church is not like the stereotype that these books and publications are painting. I must say majority of churches I know do have this issue to deal with, but there may be a couple who do have a good balance of people/programs, or even be too focused on people and neglecting programs. We must think through this issue objectively and with discernment.

3. The push towards people ministry in a church should be a church-wide initiative

To be able to have a successful change towards focusing on people ministry, there needs to be a shift in mindsets of the church body as a whole. Follow up, discipleship and training are hopefully things that are on the forefront of the minds of church leaders, elders and pastors. These people are the visionaries for this change. If the leaders believe in it, model it and inspire their team members about people ministry and follow up, the church as a whole will be geared up to make this change. Funnily enough, the process of follow up and discipleship is a structure and program - which demonstrates in itself that programs and structure are still necessary for follow up and people ministry.

Just to clarify, I am all for people ministry. This is what Jesus has commissioned us to do - to love God, love others and to make disciples. In turn, disciples will become disciple makers, and a lovely cycle of training and follow up begins. However, I think that rather than shifting from one extreme of 'mainly program ministry' to the other extreme of 'mainly people ministry' is not the solution to this problem within churches of today. We need to find the balance where programs and structures allow effective follow up and discipleship; where programs are created in order to support a vibrant and growing people ministry. Lets not swing from one problem to another - but rather think and make changes rationally, objectively and using God's wisdom.

Cliques, Groups, And all that Jazz

Friendship groups happen in every situation. In school, in university, in socials, events, where-ever people congregate, there is usually a dominant or a number of distinct groups. How are these groups formed? Well there are a number of reasons, the main being a sense of commonality between a group of people. Everyone shares something in common, may it be a physical, personality, skill, or whatever kind of trait, characteristic or mindset it is.

There is nothing wrong with this in itself, but quite often, these groups can become 'cliques' or an 'in-group' or groups which set themselves apart from other people. The trail of devastation behind these groups are marginalised people who are left out and behind.

This is quite damaging in secular society, but this is so much more damaging in a Christian context. Cliques can often linger due to reasons such as ignorance, lack of awareness, purpose distancing, gossip, and other reasons.

Firstly, this mentality does not promote Christian ideals such as love, grace and acceptance. If we are meant to be ambassadors of Christ and examples of Christ in this world, having these cliques do not communicate the right message.

Secondly, cliques do opposite of our call to be disciple makers. If we are called to share the gospel and evangelise to the world, having groups which repel people is a paradox to our goals. Cliques do not allow us to be an 'inclusive' movement, but rather an 'exclusive' movement.

Thirdly, cliques and the damage it causes are usually silent and rarely evident. It is rarely something that is tackled or confronted. But its consequences are Kingdom-impacting.

Have a think about the groups or ministries you are in. Are they like cliques? Is there an in group and out group? Are people being hurt because of this? I know that many, if not every church and church group I have seen is impacted in some way by this. We as God's people need to send the right message to each other so that we can be 'wise in behaviour towards the outsiders' who want to become a Christ follower.

Judgemental Christians

I was once a very judgemental person. I probably still am in some ways, but its been a journey of growing and learning through many happy and sad life experiences over many years that I have come to this shift in perspective and orientation in my thoughts.

I find that as a Christian, it can be easy to fall into this judgemental mindset, whether consciously or subconsciously, natural or trained, purposely or accidental. Here are some reasons that I can think of in regards to how we can become judgemental:

- When we make statements about specific people and issues based on subjective, perspective, unfounded or false evidence (on a whimp)

- When we make general and broad statements or stereotypes about people and issues without realising that general and individual are two different ball parks

- When we try to help people but do it in a way which condemns them and puts them down instead

- When we jump into issues and discussions without gaining the big picture perspective on the actual issue

- When we lose control mentally and our temper/anger/frustration takes over (and we usually say really stupid things about people that we regret later)

- When we are so focused on rebuking and admonishing that we forget the aspect of Christlike love and forgiveness

We are not in a position to judge and condemn anyone We are all sinners alike and fall short of the glory of God. I might be able to see the speck in my brother or sister's eye, but I know there is a log in my own! We are not taught to judge in a view to condemn but we are taught to love each other and spur each other on to do good works - to be Christlike. We are to love, to forgive, to encourage, to teach and to grow so that we can all finish the race and hear God say "well done, good and faithful servant".

Stereotypes

Tonight while talking to some friends, the issue of stereotypes came up in my mind, and its something I've thought about on and off for a while...

Basically I think that a lot of us lump people into various 'stereotype' groups without letting them show their true selves (either in a serious or joking manner). In a sense, by doing this, we are subconsciously judging each other when we are probably not looking impartially or objectively at a person. We aren't really in a position to give judgement, especially unfounded judgement on people. Rather, we should be trying to find out one's true character and personality, and also encouraging and spurring each other on to be more Christlike. Unfounded judgement towards someone can destroy one's self esteem and be hurtful towards our brothers and sisters in Christ. Lets be positive, uplifting and encouraging, instead of negative, stubborn and critical in our actions towards others.

"And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching."

Quite ironic that the movie titled "The Karate Kid" is about Kung Fu and has nothing to do with Karate... Biggest cop out of a otherwise decent movie.

By far my favourite quote of the movie and something that I hold true to in life is:

‎"Life will knock us down but we can choose whether or not to get back up."

What this means is that, whatever happens in life, the most important thing is how we respond to happenings in life. In a fight or spire, your opponent will have times where they will knock you over to the ground. The thing to worry about is not that you are on the ground, but what will you do next? This has parallels to life. There will always be times of joy, but also times of sadness, suffering and hardship. What makes someone who they are is not what kind of 'times' they are in, but moreso how they respond to life's situations as they come and go. This shows one's true character and heart.

This is just like humans and sin. Sin has knocked us all over. Satan is knocking us over as we speak. But God has given us the opportunity to get back up. Its our choice, and our response is the most important decision we make in this life. This response defines where our true heart lies, and where our eternal security is.

Its God telling us that our slate of sin is wiped clear. Its all God. We can do nothing to be forgiven.

But forgiveness demands a response. God wants us to respond by putting Him as Lord of our lives. Otherwise, does God's forgiveness really mean anything to you if you don't respond to this massive gesture from God?

Also, Jesus teaches us that because God has forgiven us, we must forgive others. He teaches this plainly, through parables and through the Lord's Prayer. Its not because other people are worth forgiving (they may, but that is not the point) but because God has set the example of love by forgiving us of all our sins against God - our creator and ultimate judge.

Satan may be wrecking havoc in our world still, but we know that through Jesus' death and ressurection, God's love reigns over Satan's sinfulness. God's plan reigns Satan's schemes. God's Kingdom reigns over Satan's demonic powers. We will have troubles in this world, we will do stupid things and stupid things will be done to us. But God is always at work.

Joseph's example in Genesis rings to bell. His brothers despised him and one day, they captured him and sold him as a slave. What an act of injustice! But God still works. Years later, Joseph was elevated to a high position in the Egyptian palace and manages to bump into his brothers, who were poor because of the famine. By nature and knowing what his brothers did to him, Joseph could have reacted badly and had the power to do anything to his brothers. But how does Joseph respond?

But Joseph said to them, "Don't be afraid. Am I in the place of God? You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives."

How much more true is that today?

The brilliance of the iPad is that it's the anytime-anywhere computer. On the subway. In the hall waiting for the elevator. In a car on the way to the airport. Any free moment becomes a potential iPad moment.

The iPhone can do roughly the same thing, but not exactly. Who wants to watch a movie in bed on an iPhone?

So why is this a problem? It sounds like I was super-productive. Every extra minute, I was either producing or consuming.

But something — more than just sleep, though that's critical too — is lost in the busyness. Something too valuable to lose.

Boredom.

Being bored is a precious thing, a state of mind we should pursue. Once boredom sets in, our minds begin to wander, looking for something exciting, something interesting to land on. And that's where creativity arises.

My best ideas come to me when I am unproductive. When I am running but not listening to my iPod. When I am sitting, doing nothing, waiting for someone. When I am lying in bed as my mind wanders before falling to sleep. These "wasted" moments, moments not filled with anything in particular, are vital.

Battling Betrayal

Our lives are so busy, with so much happening, and so much taking our focus and time. One thing that really kicks the momentum out of something is an action called betrayal. It happens in our friendships, in our workplaces and in ministry. Betrayal happens when you put your trust and expectation to deliver in something or someone, and not only do they 'not fulfil' the task, but rather its like they turn their back and go against what was originally asked of them. It means to 'break trust'. Its almost like giving them your trust, and them just ripping it up and throwing your trust away.

Betrayal hurts in all situations, sometimes it can never be mended, especially if one or both parties do not show forgiveness and becomes hard-hearted over the situation.

Here are some ways I have thought of (in the past 30 minutes) that would help stop this potentially hurting situation from occurring:

1. Keep reminding yourself of the bigger picture. If someone is genuine, they are in a friendship/work/ministry situation where everyone believes in the common vision. Betrayal can occur when someone loses sight of this big vision, either through forgetfulness or being bogged down on smaller issues.

2. Be genuine and work with each other. Don't gossip to others about it, but deal with the issue directly with the person who is involved. Again, if both parties do have that common vision, then both parties should be willing to work with each other in order to stop betrayal from occurring.

3. Actively seek and show forgiveness. Betrayal can be something that one does not purposely intend to do, but for one reason or another, has escalated to that situation. Both parties have to be mature enough to 1. seek forgiveness in the 'betraying' party and 2. show forgiveness for the 'betrayed' party. If both do not occur, there will never be closure in the situation, and this can cause continued friction and distance.

Relationships with friends, workmates and co-workers in the Kingdom of God are fragile and not perfect by any means. Satan will always hone in and agitate these things to see how much damage he can cause. Lets fight against this on all fronts, by focusing on our common vision, being genuine and working with each other, and seeking/showing forgiveness to our brothers and sisters in Christ.

Focus on the Elephant

So often we as people, just like the blind men in the analogy of the blind men and the elephant, get so bogged down with our own perspectives and point of views, that we forget to seek the big picture and the full story. Like the first blind man who feels the elephant's legs and deduces that it is a tree trunk, or the second blind man, who feels the tail and concludes that its a rope, or the third blind man, who feels the trunk and says that it is a snake, we often are far too fast to make supposedly objective conclusions and become ignorant of the wider picture.

Before making decisions or conclusions, please go out and analyse the wider context of the issue at hand. Who knows, you might have missed something, or you might ascertain more information which will change the whole situation altogether. Not doing this can lead to rash decisions, hurt for other people affected, and awkward situations and circumstances that could have been totally avoided. Decisions have consequences. You don't want to unintentionally walk all over other people and cause them headaches and heartaches. Focus on the elephant... Go out of your way to look at it, elephants are big and easy to find.

Wise Wishes for the World

1. Don't be a hypocrite lip-service Christian. If you can talk the talk, then walk the talk.

"Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says."

2. Don't be a gossip. True friends will communicate with each other about any disagreements or conflicts, however big or small. If you are a friend, you would not just listen to gossip but confirm/investigate/talk to the person about the issue at hand. Practice love and forgiveness to your friends who are your brothers and sisters in Christ.

“A gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid a man [or woman] who talks too much”

“a perverse man stirs up dissension, and a gossip separates close friends”

"If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over."

3. Love and Respect - They go hand in hand. Love without respect can be like an uncontrolled burning passion which is let free to roam and burn, while respect without love is like building up a foundation with no Sydney Opera House, no exquisite building. Both need to work hand in hand, simultaneously, and people are going to fail because we are human. But we have to keep at it and grow and mature as men and women of God.

4. Life - is not always a smooth sail. There are always going to be things that pop up that you have to tackle face on. God is at work in the good and the bad times. When its good its easy to follow God. When its hard, its easy for us to run away or give up. We have to learn to trust God, be patient with Him, and be content wherever He has put us.

"I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty..... I can do everything through him who gives me strength."

5. Disagreements between brothers - confront lovingly, discuss honestly, resolve graciously. When there is tension between people, without closure, issues can bubble on for days, weeks, months, years. We think we have dealt with them by sidestepping and letting it slip, but really its always there on the sidelines waiting to come up again. That is not closure. Anger that is not dealt with properly, whether explosive or implosive, is equally dangerous. How we deal with and react to anger is what causes us to sin or not sin. We need to learn to be open, seek a definitive and objective perspective, and forgive and show grace. Don't let things bubble over.

Life is not like a series of compartments. Its not segmented into different parts such as church, study, work, friends, different groups of people, etc. etc.

Rather it is like a single bottle. The big rocks may be the big things in your life. The smaller rocks which fill the gaps are the other things that are in your life. Either way, it is only one life, one compartment. You take a rock out, add a rock in, and things will change. Its impossible to take a rock out without it impacting the others. If I get a new job, get fired, get a parking fine, eat out for dinner, it impacts the rest of my life. I might need to find a new job, be tighter on spending, or get more exercise.

One of the analogies that has been on my mind lately when thinking about priorities and new possibilities.... Hope it may stimulate your thoughts :)

Motions of Life

Most of us are familiar with Newton's laws of Motion - or at least heard about it before....

i) Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it.

iii) For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

I believe these 'scientific' ideas can be applied into all areas of life....

For example, whatever you do or decide, there will be some kind of reaction or consequence. You push someone, they will fall down. You speed and you will get a letter from the cops with a nice fine. You do good things and people will appreciate you... etc. etc. Its like the analogy that if you go back in time, even if you step on a little ant, it could change the whole course of the future. Or the analogy of your life being a glass jug... and the rocks and pebbles inside are all the different parts of you and your life. If you take a bit out, add a bit in, or disturb it in any way, it will cause reactions to the rest of your life, and other people's lives too. Life isn't compartmentalised, its a conglomeration of everything you are.

Recently I've been thinking and I've listened to a couple of good talks on Romans. A good preacher, Martyn Lloyd-Jones, in one of his sermons, stated that if he could summarise Christianity in two words, he would pick 'But Now'. Why? Jesus has intervened in the course of history. He has impacted the 'uniform motion' perceived by the world and the consequence is that we have to respond to Him. Tomorrow's sermon at church is "Jesus' impact on the world". How did Jesus impact the world? Was he just another man, a good man, a prophet, or is He the King, the Messiah, the saviour of the world?

Jesus' Last Words

Been pondering over a passage in the last week.. here's a quick overview...

Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

Jesus makes 4 points - two actions sandwiched by two statements about Jesus:

1. Jesus has been given all authority in heaven and earth (statement) - Jesus is the King who is in control

2. Go and make disciples of all nations (action) - Why? Because Jesus is the King! We have to spread the news to all nations.

3. Teach them to obey His commands (action) - If Jesus is King and we are telling others that He is King, we need to tell them how to submit to Him or how to live a life for this King.

4. Jesus will be with us to the end of the age (statement) - Jesus promises us something no other prophet, king or ruler can. Jesus' kingship is eternal - He will be our King forever, to the ends of the ages, and His kingship will never perish.

Jesus is the everlasting King, He has authority over heaven and earth. We must spread the news, and tell others that He is King, and that we have to submit to Him and live our lives for Him.

Just reflecting on a couple of things I have noticed recently at church and in people I know... This is a familiar tune and a familiar idea...

Blessed be Your name

Where Your streams of abundance flow

Then we come to the fourth verse. Will we sing this truthfully? Or will we be singing a tune that we don't even model in our lives?

Blessed be Your name
On the road marked with suffering
Where there's pain in the offering
Blessed be Your name

Jesus describes what it means to follow Him: "...he must deny himself, take up his cross and follow me". Following Christ is during the good times and the bad times. Its not when we feel like it we follow Him, but rather we choose to follow Him with all of our lives. It is a path of self denial and putting Jesus first at all times.

Will we be a people who choose to bless God's name through all our lives?

Words and Actions

Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.

Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do.

Lets not be Christ followers only by title or by word of mouth, but by demonstration through our entire lives. No rock is left unturned - Jesus demands all of our lives, and 99% is not sufficient. He wants us to deny ourselves, take up our cross - die to our selfish nature, and to live a life which wholeheartedly follows Him.

We need to listen to what the Bible says AND to do what it says; to have our faith in Jesus AND show it outworking in all of our lives. One without the other just doesn't work.

Are you following Christ 100%? Can you humble yourself to handing all your 'crowns' to God and living a Christ-centred life? Our lives are a testimony to the world which, in all aspects of our lives, should point to the impact of the cross of Christ in our lives.

But life's not about what you've been dealt, but what you do with the circumstances given to you.

Will you be the one who at the end of the day, says:

1) 'Master, you entrusted me with two talents; see, I have gained two more.'

2) 'I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.'

I want to make the most of all the opportunities I have been given, however good or bad the hand dealt may be, so that one day I will hear the Master reply: "Well done, good and faithful servant!"

Epiphany - God's Unfailing Love

I love how songs can speak God's words of truth...

I had this *click* moment when I was thinking about various verses I've been reading, and also trying to piece together the idea of God's love and grace (how they fit together), and these words from a song came to my mind. It just clicked.... God's unfailing sacrificial love. Pure and perfect love. True love. How?

Every time when we sin, we rebel against God, we are unholy, unrighteous and dirty scum in His holy presence. We don't deserve to to be anywhere near Him. Every time we sin we should be removed from God's sight, unworthy to be in His presence.

But God's love allows us to come to His presence, and to even have a personal relationship with Him! His love is not limited to how many times we sin and rebel against God, but is unfailing, is eternal, is unconditional.

God's love is demonstrated through grace in salvation - an undeserved act of saving us from our sins through the once-for-all death of Jesus. His death allows us to instead be holy, righteous and pure before God, if we believe in this once-for-all death of Jesus taking away our sins.

What greater love is there, than God's unfailing love? A love that is totally sacrificial, completely unconditional, never failing. A love that never gives up, however sinful, stupid, and worldly we may tend to be. A love that sent the Son of God, Jesus Christ, to the cross for me.

Thoughts from "God Delusion"

I've been really confronted today with thoughts about apologetics and defending/explaining/sharing the Christian faith to others, and just had some quick thoughts that I've been mulling over....

1. LISTEN - When people are debating or discussing issues of the Christian faith, both sides have to be open to listen to what the other side is saying. Firstly, the Christian must hear and try to extrapolate what the other person is questioning about and even try to understand the person's barrier to Christianity. The Christian should be willing to listen to the concerns of others instead of purely 'bible bashing'. Remember we have to act in love to our neighbours too. Also, the skeptic must be opening to listening to the stance of the Christian. Often I hear skeptics who argue against Christianity but don't really listen to what the Christian is saying, because he/she has already formed a notion that Christianity doesn't work, which means he/she is moreso trying to push his idea onto others instead of impartially discussing the topic.

2. STAY FOCUSED - More often than not, debates around religion centre around the premise of the idea of a divine being (a god), the compatibility of science and religion (evolution vs creation) and the evidence of Jesus' resurrection as prime examples. While usually discussions tangent off to very particular and specific questions of philosophical/moral/theological/etc. issues, we must remember as Christians to focus on the Christian belief we are trying to describe, and bring things back into perspective to the core values which we hold on to as Christ followers. While its good to delve into those specific issues, we must always remember and focus on the bigger picture of what Christianity is all about.

3. BE CONCISE - While we aren't all trained theologians, it is a really wise decision to familiarise ourselves (as Christians) with concise answers to commonly asked questions about the Christian faith. It is beneficial to know our testimonies, know the truths that Christians hold on to and cannot let go of, and to be able to explain these things in a concise and understandable manner. This prepares us for situations when we are able to explain and defend our faith.

Family Values

I love my family...

There's been a couple of big things that have happened in the past 6 months or so that have caused and challenged me to really think about how I view my family and if I'm taking a right or wrong attitude to them or not...

I know my family is not perfect... but then no one is perfect. We all have our troubles and disagreements, but when I stop and think about it, there are so many blessings and good facets that I love about my family, that I am just so grateful for. I am so blessed to have been born into a Christian family... I am eternally grateful to have been brought up learning about God and seeing the love of Jesus in my life. Mum and Dad made so many sacrifices for the family - worked long hours during the day and at night too so that my brother and I were brought up well, moved countries twice for better education and life opportunities, and doing all they could so that we would be able to do the best we can in life. Mum and Dad also gave us the good examples of how to live, and how to live as Christians. I can remember all the 'wise sayings' that Dad reminded me of, and all the loving and encouraging words from Mum. I can see in hindsight, all the ways my parents showed their love to me... from Dad running downstairs to open the garage door when I get home, to when Mum hugs me when she can see that I'm down and rotten... They were always there to care for me, encourage me, and to remind me that they love me and I'm not a nobody in this world...

I don't really know if that was just a dump from my mind and made sense or anything... and I doubt Mum or Dad will read this, but...

Thank you Mum and Dad.

Thank you Lord for blessing me with this family.

I was doing an exercise with a friend in regards to our weekly timetables this year, and I scribbled down what I was doing last year (in hindsight) and this is what I found out:

One of the most popular Christian worship songs going around for the past year is Chris Tomlin's "How Great is our God". It has been top 5 on CCLI's most popularly used worship songs for the past year or two, and it is quite an easy song to pick up and sing.

Tonight I've spent a good half hour picking this song apart and trying to figure out how to piece the meaning of the song together as a unified message... and it has definitely been an interesting adventure!
